I have found and looked at 2 balers locally and am looking to buy one for next year. I am not a bigtime hay farmer or anything just a hobby farmer who has around 35 acres to bale next year.

I realize these are very old machines and my budget isn't large... That said...

I am looking for help or opinions as to which of these you all might recommend. I have read in the archives on both and I am stumped as to which might be better. Here is what I have found on the two I have seen.

The NH 66

This unit is sitting on a friends farm and hasn't been used in over 2 years I would guess. There is no grease on the knotter gears any longer and the chute shows signs of rust. It is free as I have turned the flywheels over and it moved and operated fine. Just no maintenance done recently. The owner has no idea if it still works but It worked when put away etc. Overall it really wasn't in bad shape but I didn't like that it was out in the weather.

He is asking $200

JD 14T

This is on a farm that the gentleman is turning 92 and has decided to stop farming! no joke. So he is selling off his equipment. This unit is well greased and has been run this spring. It was always kept inside and is in good overall shape. The knive looks sharp in there. The owner said he did have a problem with a knotter not working quite right and he THINKS he replaced it awhile back but said it probably needs some further adjusting. I have never used a JD baler and am very unfamiliar with those knotters and setup. Overall though I would say in better physical shape possibly.

He is asking $400 OBO

I will be baling with an old farmall M. Small time guy hoping to benefit from all this good info!

Thanks All. Pro's Con's or open comments more than welcome. Basically just want something that'll do the job effeciently and keep me from going broke or losing my hay in the field!

Compared to the 66 I would go 14t.
I have one and like it alot. The only thing I dont like about it is. The capacity is tiny even when compared to my NH68.
I can throw 2 9 foot swaths together and bale just fine with my 68. 1 nine footer is max for the 14T. I put 2 together this summer and had lots of problems with the feeder over loading.

My 68 just grunts and eats.

Hi , Get the deere . Then get a manual . I don't know about the NH but I like my 14T ! Keep the the knives sharp and grease in the pitman bushings ( connecting arm ) . ...Randy

Buy the one that"s been maintained and inside! that"s a good price too. Lots of parts still availalbe from Mother Deere. Just my $0.02. Ben

I bought a JD 14T a couple years back, it was definately used, but still works. I agree, buy the one that has been stored inside and maintained. Unfortunately, I store mine outside due to lack of shed space. I do my best to keep it cover and wrapped up. My 14T has worked pretty well for me, I have only 5 acres to mess with at this time. Good luck on whichever baler you buy.

I myself believe the NH 66 was the best baler everbuilt BUT I would go with the JD 14T. The New Holland came out about 3 years before the John Deere that was John Deere's first try with a string baler, NH in 52, JD in 55. the JD is slightly larger capacity than the NH. The big thing is I was told several year ago that some drive parts for the NH were no longer avaible and I believe that Deere may be better at getting parts than NH. Now that I have said that I have 2 NH 66 balers setting here that I want to make one out of some time before I need it. And I have seen the 66 sell for as low as $60 and the price now sounds on the high side for either for what they have gone for at consignment sales 2-3 year ago, haven't been to any sales this year.

Hi Mark,
I used to run a 66 for a few years. They make good bales, but small pickup and you have to spoon feed them, otherwise they tend to break wad boards. Kinda poor design, on the other hand, this baler had seen it`s better days. I then bought a 24T and have loved the thing, kinda same situation you have, farmer took great care of it, just outgrew it.
I believe the 24 and 14T ar very similar, durable machines.
Brands aside, I would go with the one that has been maintaned better, nothing will drive you nuts faster than a baler that`s broke down when you need it. Just my opinion Brokenwrench

Mark: I have used a NH 66 for the last two years and it is a good old baler . But it is old. Wad board for feeder and boards for plunger . These old balers just keep plugging away and making bales. I am selling mine this year but only because I am going to a thrower set, not a lot of help in labour department anymore. Just as a comparison I am asking $300 for mine with a new wad board. Keep in mind this is Cdn $. Paul

I would pick the NH 66 over the JD any day but I am a NH fan. Hope this helps

I"m a NH guy with a S67 and 68. If faced with the same choice, I"d buy the 14t. If you were comparing the 14t to the S67 or 68.. I might go with one of them. $400 sounds like a good buy for a shedded and maintained baler.

You didn"t mention what baler you have had experience with when you noted the knotters. I don"t think brand matters much in the knotter dept. They all work on the same principles and if you worked on one you can figure them all out.
