I have roughly 50 acres on different farms that have been in hay for 10-15 years that I will be putting into crops in 2006, orginal plan was to fall moldboard and wait but with fuel prices the 6-16 plow may be more fuel than I want to spend. The problem is that the last two years when rotating similar ground I have no-tilled with poor results.04 corn yielded 66 bu. (rest was @ 121 bu.) this year I notill drilled beans good stand but they a very short with minimal pods, I am hoping for 25 bu. the rest will be near 55-60 bu. So I hope you can see why I am kinda down on no-tilling into old sod, had my mind made up until fuel prices. Any opinions. Thanks.

You need to bust up hardpan with a ripper or a DMI chisel but any more a molboard just dont cut it anymore and your yeilds will more than pay for the ripping if it rains next year , then about feburary on a nice day go hit it with a disk to level it out.

You need to bust up hardpan with a ripper or a DMI chisel but any more a molboard just dont cut it anymore and your yeilds will more than pay for the ripping if it rains next year , then about feburary on a nice day go hit it with a disk to level it out.

I would go ahead and plow it. It sounds like your experience shows that the extra fuel costs will more than be paid back with better yields. I wouldn't go out of sod and into row crops without tillage. Here, the no till corn fad has long passed. It just won't work consistently well, year after year. I raised no till corn for about ten years. No till beans works much better, at least here.

Your yields may be off due to severe compaction.How many trips over has that ground had while in hay in the past 10 years? You probably need to run a DMI or Zone builder through it.

As I see it, you have two choices. Plow 'er up or leave it in hay another year.

Fuel prices never seem to go down. :>(

Did you do soil tests on the acreage that yielded 55 bu/acre?
I can't see how no-tilling is the sole purpose that corn yield was reduced by two or three times what it should be.
I'd fertilize and lime according to soil tests and then disk the acreage to incorporate the fertilizer and to disk down the sod. Cheaper on fuel, and all you'll have to do is put out some type of glyphosate and plant your corn in the spring.

Killing the sod now with a glyphosate product and leaving open all winter might help your yield problem. Maybe zone tillage in just the rows is something to look into. Go to New Ag Talk and look for Ed Winkle in either the crop or machinery forums, he may have better suggestions.
