Tour into my 415 tonight...convinced that I would find the rubber flex coupler was the culprit and a reasonably easy fix. I was not happy to find that it was the vertical primary shaft...all the splines off the top of the shaft were GONE! The star drive that fits over these splines seemed only slightly worn. I can bet this is going to be expensive.

I know a guy who is working on the same discbine for an older gentleman, same symptons, and exact same problem with the shaft. This seems like an extremely poor design, where the most expensive part is the weak link...or maybe they did it intentially!

Another question...all my discs except the middle one have no up and down play when pressure is applied to the edge of the disc. The movement is very slight, but noticeable. Do I have a bearing problem looming on the horizon? I put my hand on top of all the discs when I shut down yesterday and they all felt the same temperature. Finally...does the cutterbar have to be completely dismantled to replace a single bearing, or can it be done from the outside by removing the turtle etc..

The 415 shares its drive components with the vastly more popular but narrower 411. Downshaft failures on 411's are far less common even without considering in my area they outnumbered 415's by a wide margin. I think the spline set was just not up to the extra load imposed by the wider 415. You can swap out bearings on the vertical "station" shafts fairly easily. By the way, you will need a set of snapring pliers that will handle a VERY stout internal snapring of about 3.5" when doing the shaft/coupler repair. The largest of the somewhat common 12 piece sanpring plier set is not big enough. I coughed up $75 and bought a ratcheting pair off the tool truck rather than continuing to eat those mean suckers.
