Well this is the last statement on the cow calf/milk replacement thing. It's now just over a week and the cow and calf are doing great. I had her tied until yeterday and had to tie her leg so she wouldn't kick the calf, I untied her yesterday and she has finally taken to mothering the calf, mooing softly and looking for him if her runs around the pen. I gave him transitional milk from another cow about the end of his second day, stayed with helping him suck twice a day for days four till now and gave him about two quarts of milk replacement, morning and night. The calf is frisky and lively and appears to be showing gain, I am now going to start cutting the milk replacement and see if she can keep him nourished. Using milk replacement is a time consuming nuisance and I would rather the pair were out in the field, however, I am going to keep them in the barn for a few more days to observe and if things look good they will be out in the field with the rest of the cows next week. This isn't the first time I have had this, a heifer three years ago dropped her calf and walked away, never licked it or went near it..I had her in the barn for over a week before she finally took to the calf. Also this most recent heifer didn't clean untill Thursday, four days after the birth, there wasn't a lot but enough cleaning that it caught my eye..then she gradually became a mother to the calf. Also found that the damned cats found the bag of milk replacer..lotta cats with white faces...now in a secure clean place..thanks to everyone...Mike in exeter Ontario
