Was cutting coastal today and at the end of the row, I disengaged the pto. When I reengaged the pto (at idle), I thought I heard a noise coming from the swather, but was not sure. Started to move forward and I was not cutting the grass.

Upon investigation, the rollers work fine, and the turtles will turn initially, but when you enter the grass they will quit.

Opened up the gear box and everything seems fine in there...no shavings, broken gears etc. So, the problem is between the main gearbox and the cutterhead (all the turtles turn fine together).

First off, does anyone know what I am dealing with here... a solid shaft, splined shaft or some sort of hardened rubber/plastic gears. Second, how do I take it apart...do I take the bolts out of the bottom of the gear box and drop the cutter bar down, or do I start taking it apart at the bottom...

Was cutting at a buddies place, and about 5 minutes before this I hit a piece of 2" schedule 80 pvc pipe...did not think anything of it at the time...but now I am wondering if that didn't cause my problem.

Sorry for the long post...

Thanks in advance,
Tim

Another possibility is slack has developed in the drive belt-if it is like my NH 615 disk mower. Maybe increasing the tension will work. Hope so. Mike

No belts on a 415.

There is a flex coupler and shaft that joins the bevel gearbox and the cutterbar. Either the coupler has failed, or the splines at the top of the shaft and bottom of the coupler have failed. Remove the LH shoe, support the bar with a decent floor jack, remove the four large bolts going up through from the bottom of the bar into the bearing holder for the LH blade holder. Rotate the bar assembly out pivoting it on the RH hangar & cone. Remove the ring of bolts from the underside of the bevel gearbox and remove the LH drive cone and repair as required. Best to buy the service manual for detailed procedure and torque values. Not terribly complicated, but repeat failures can easily occur if not done 'by the numbers'.

Rick is correct. I"m sure you will find the flex coupler has failed. Steve

Thank you very much for the information...I will be going to the dealer this morning, will get printouts and see what I can get for parts "guessing" what I need based on your info. Am going to order the service manual...should have done it already! Hopefully they have one I can take a look at in the mean time.

Again, thank you very much!!!

Tim
