I have a IH 574 diesel, does anyone out there have any experience baling with this tractor using either a vermeer 504si or 5400 rebel, or other make of tractor with similar horsepower? I have a few hills to contend with, but not too bad. I currently use a Hesston 5530 baler, but would like to move up to a bigger baler without having to get a bigger tractor. 504 vermeer's are easier to find and cheaper to buy, I'm not sure what the difference is between the two balers. The 5400 rebel according to vermeer, can be used effectivly with a 40 hp tractor. A neighbor of mine has a 5400, he says I would have no trouble with one of those. I used a 445 Long and the Hesston for years with no problem, and the Long weighs about 800-1000 lbs. less than the IH. What input can anyone give me?

The two balers are very similar. You should be able to pull either. The main differences are the I has a fricton disk clutch, the rebel has radial pin clutch. The I has double side tension and the rebel has single sided. The rebel will be a newer baler. Either baler will work for you.

I just bought and used a 505 SI pulling it with a 6200 JD, which is 66 PTO HP. There are some plates called bale restrictors that go above the roller the bale rides on that will reduce the HP needed. They reduce it by keeping the hay off of the sides of the baler by about an inch thus reducing the friction on the sides. All in all this Vemeer baler is a keeper.

The 504IS and Rebel 5400 are very close to the same baler. The 504I is the basis of the Rebel 5400. Either baler will do the same thing. Just remember that if you decide to bale silage you will need mor than 40 HP but in dry hay you are fine. That tractor had 52 HP when new and should have no problems with either baler.
