I have an old JD running gear that was my Grandfathers that I am thinking about restoring. I know the king pins are froze solid in it. How hard will it be to find replacement bearings etc for this. Anybody have an exploded view of how everything comes apart?
Thanks for your help

Wil

Thanks for the responses. I will have to figure out what model number it is and go from there. It is on rubber with 6 bolt rims and has a hand crank winch on it that was used to raise the old wooden flare box that used to be on it. So maybe a 953? Will try to get some pictures and post them.

Thanks

Wil

6 bolt rims? 953 or 963.

Try mother deere. I know 7 or 8 years ago I was able to buy a new real axle stub so would guess you should be able to get what you need.

953 will have hubs with a cast iron screw on cap and will look longer than normal. 963 will have hubs that look like most other implements and will have a press in cap.

These are good old gears and there are LOTS of the 953's out there. They are still holding their value also. Around me you can't touch a usable 953 for less than $300.

Are you working on a 953 or a 802. The 953's were really built as a rubber tired gear. The tongue will flare out where it attached to the gear. 802's were mostly steel wheeled and if on rubber will probably have spoked wheels. 802 would originally had a wood tongue.

Now to the question. If it is a 953 (I doubt it) most of the parts are still available through deere.

If it is a 802 take the cap off the spindle (kingpin) and heat the casting the spindle runs in with a rosebud till it glows. Spray some sort of penetrating oil in the moving parts and start hammering on the steering arm. With a little patience things will work loose. Drop the spindle out to let the loose rust out and clean up a little. Put all back together hit with a grease gun and all will be right with the world. BE CAREFUL SOME PENETRATING OILS WILL FLAME UP WHEN DOING THIS I KNOW WD40 WILL. I have had real good luck with this method. Have done 2 or 3 and most were donated to local threshing show where the gears get abused so they will stand up after heating.

Make sure to head the warning about the flame up. This won't hurt the work you are doing but be cautious that it may happen.
