Case A6 Combine

How rare is a Case A6 combine with the wisconsin engine. I would like to have one to pull behind my SC when I get it restored. I found one for sale but it is pretty far away from me and I don't really look forward paying $2.50 plus a gallon to drag it across the country, especially after just getting back from a 1200 mile trip to a show in Illinois. I guess the real question I am asking is how likely is it to find another one if I don't buy this one.

I would say pretty rare, in Ohio and In. you would not find any. I have seen too often I or someone else thinks a better unit will come along and you never see anouther again in any condition, if it is what you want go for it as if you don't and you ever find anouther you will pay more for it than you will for this one

Did you come to the Rantoul,Illinois Show? I was watching the old combines Fri. & Sat. We had a A-6 combine and I was thinking it sure would be nice to see one in the field.Ours was a pto driven with a good DC Case. It would have ate those others up with that spike tooth cyl.Maybe I can find one up here and get it in the show in the next 2 years. Those old combines were fun to watch. Earl In Mahomet,Illinois

Dad had an A6 in NW Iowa in the 1950s & 60s. He had a procedure for putting the engine in storage. If I remember right, he poured oil in the carb until it stopped and then turned the crankshaft 1/4 turn. Apparently if this was not done, the valves would stick. Every season it would start right off and ran for many years.

Would think it depends on two factors depending on your location.

1. Did Case have a major presence in your area during that era?

2. Did the farms in your are lend themselves to small combines?

If you answered yes to both these put some ads in the local penny saver's and Farm Bureau Spokesman.

I am in NW IA and those A6's were real popular (well there were a lot of them in use). Almost all had the V4 wisconsin. That engine did not have a good reputation in that application. Most comments were when you got it started in the morning it stayed running till you were done for the day.

Would bet you will be able to find a good one in a 150 mile radius.

A couple of years ago I put a ad in the Farm Bureau Spokesman looking for a MM 2 row cultivator and only had to drive across the county to get one. So there is always hope.
