Thanks for all the comments fellas, the calf is doing fine, running around in the pen showing a frisky nature. He sucked twice today with heifer tied and me on a rope around her leg..quite a battle but I will keep it up. I have given him transitional milk from another cow, about a quart, I have not used the milk replacement yet. I am incorporating your ideas especially keep him on the cow, I am interested in the shot that can be given to make her calm down and take to the calf...oh and "Getting sh%t Faced" has taken on a whole new meaning in my barn, I thought it was drinking two six packs....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Actually, the shot is oxytocin. It is a hormone used in dairy cattle to encourge the cow to let her milk down, but it has the additional effect of increasing the bond between mother and calf. Here is some more info:>Link

The "shot" you think you want is " romp em". It is given in the tail vien and is not really something you want to try without experience or help. You have to get it from a vet.It will definately calm a cow down but I doubt it will make the cow "take" to the calf.

Oxytocin does not calm them down. It causes the milk to let down(come to her milk). Also, it causes the uterus to contract and is used if there happens to be retained placenta. It is also released naturally when the little one nurses. This naturally makes the uterus contract at first nursing. Hence, the term "after pains".

good luck Mike. If the calf gets a good start he may be persistant enough that she will give in and be a mom about it.
