What do you guys think.. I have noticed a great difference with new holland pickups and john deere pickups.. New hollandspick up alot better in small hay conditions then do JD.. Jd's leave alot behind...

But then again i am not to imressed with new hollands feeding system... John deere beats them on the auger...

Both have its advantages and disadvantages

I've owned JD's and New Holland's with moderate success. Then I bought a 4570 Hesston - There is no turning back now. Leaf loss is proportional to pick-up height therefore the Hesston beats any side pull machine for producing quality hay. Any leaves or stems left by my 258 New Holland rake are picked up by the hesston leaving an acceptionally clean field.

Have a Deere 336; It doesn't mind at all dropping hay off the sides of the pickup. Our old NH 271 would drag in any hay near it's pickup. The NH would eat hay - pick-up teeth cupped up to sweep hay up where deere's teeth are short & straight. NH has that fork feeding system which is superior to the deere auger-although in most crops the auger gets the job done.

I ran the deeres and the New Hollands, some models have closer spacing and more teeth but I never had the problem youtalk about unless it is real early model. Also in straw the auger on the deere is a limiting factor compared to the feed system of the 570 New Holland

All I bale here is bahia. If it is not fertilized or not enoguh rain, it can be real thin. My 2 NH balers do a fair job at picking it up, and they do not have the super sweep pickup. When fertilized and the rain is right, the windrows can be quite thick, in which case, they still pick up fine.
