Dispatched many skunks last year using a small live trap and dry catfood. They love it and it was not as tempting for the real cats as canned catfood would have been...so, rarely caught a cat. Some lessons learned 1)If trap is outside on dirt/grass, fasten a piece of plywood to the bottom as the skunk will try to dig out and if the ground is soft/muddy it will make a compacted mess of grass and mud. Also, the plywood will make is slide easily on the ground. 2) If you tie a piece of rope to the trap, definitley tie off the other end. I shoot them, carefully, with a .22, and then when they are dead, I have a long pole with a hook on the end that I use to drag the whole trap off.Funny skunk story and motivation for me to get rid of the skunks...I left the feed room door open one night. My wife went down after dark to get some more feed for her show colts. She turned the main barn lights on, but the feed room light switch is on the back wall. When she walked into the feed room, she put her hand down to pet the "cat" that was sitting on a bucket near the entrance...then she thought better of that as it was dark in the room. As she turned the lights on, our Dobermann started barking, and as she turned around, realized she had almost petted a very large skunk....
