I stack my small square bales on pallets in the barn. The barn hold about 5000 bales. In the winter the skunks have found the tunnels created by the pallets underneath the hay to be a safe haven. They wreak havoc at times in the barn! ANybody got any good ideas on how to keep them out or get rid of them? The cows won't eat the hay that has been spoiled by the skunks.

Over the years with five box traps in the sweet corn fields I've caught quite a few skunks. A 22 is what I plug them with & by the time I dump him out of the trap I think I've ALWAYS been sprayed! When you're real close, it doesn't smell that bad! Of course no one bothers you much for a while.

Dispatched many skunks last year using a small live trap and dry catfood. They love it and it was not as tempting for the real cats as canned catfood would have been...so, rarely caught a cat. Some lessons learned 1)If trap is outside on dirt/grass, fasten a piece of plywood to the bottom as the skunk will try to dig out and if the ground is soft/muddy it will make a compacted mess of grass and mud. Also, the plywood will make is slide easily on the ground. 2) If you tie a piece of rope to the trap, definitley tie off the other end.
I shoot them, carefully, with a .22, and then when they are dead, I have a long pole with a hook on the end that I use to drag the whole trap off.

Funny skunk story and motivation for me to get rid of the skunks...I left the feed room door open one night. My wife went down after dark to get some more feed for her show colts. She turned the main barn lights on, but the feed room light switch is on the back wall. When she walked into the feed room, she put her hand down to pet the "cat" that was sitting on a bucket near the entrance...then she thought better of that as it was dark in the room. As she turned the lights on, our Dobermann started barking, and as she turned around, realized she had almost petted a very large skunk....

A friend of mine said his father in law made a trap from a piece of metal pipe. Used a pipe just big enough for the skunk to go in. When the skunk enters the pipe he could not raise his tail to spray. Set the whole thing in a tub of water and then shakes out the dead skunk later. He said he removed a whole family of skunks from a brush pile this way. Good luck getting rid of the skunks.

I have removed hundreds of nuisance skunks for people. moth balls will NOT work. buy a couple live traps [box traps] at tractor supply or at an agway store. the traps should be 7"x7"x24" or bigger. bait with canned cat food or if its hot or you have to many cats around, use mini marshmellows. slowly walk up to the trapped skunk and place a cover over it, burlap, peice of old tarp. if skunk stamps its from feet or starts to raise its tail, slow down and talk to it. some you can walk up to the trap in 1-2 minutes others it takes 6-8 minutes. I have NEVER had one spray. keep any dogs away. DO NOT RELEASE the skunk some where else. the easiest way to dispatch the trapped skunk is to drown it in a pond, creek or stock tank. maybe 5 percent will spray in the water when drowning.

My dad lives in the city. He has trapped 25 skunks in his "cat trap". He takes a big rug and comes up from behind the trap and lays it over the cage. He than picks it up and puts it in his CADILAC trunk and hauls them 15mi to the wildlife preserve, sets trap on ground and opens the door with the rug off that end. When the skunk wanders off, he picks it all up and tries for a cat again.
Never been sprayed and cage still smell good. Cats go to city pound.

I had the exact situation. I used a live trap (confined area with horses and nearby houses) and put in canned dog food. I tied a 30 foot rope on the trap so I could pull it away from the area. Problem is that I didn't tie the other end to anything and the skunk pulled it into the cage. I took a 8ft piece of pvc and pulled it to a safe area and used a shotgun to finish him off.

Best thing to do is catch a couple of Black snakes & put them in the mow. Takes care of most unwanted varments. Black snake very valuable in the old wooden corn crib.

Broker,
I read a story one time about a fellow who swore the only way to get rid of skunks under a building was to put a bunch of law books under there. When asked why he said that the law books would attract lawyers and when the lawyers came, that would drive the skunks away.
