After catching the only rock in an 8 acre field with the guards on my NH 472 and bending a couple guards I noticed all the guards are well worn. I figure it's time to replace them. The ledger plates are dull and the cut is ragged. I understand there're different types available. Any opinion on long or short guards or which is better? I figure on doing the whole bar at once and that should help everything line up better too. I'm cutting grass mix, very scant alfafa.

The short guards are rock guards and the long are good for cleared land with no rocks.I have found that the short plug up more on moss & mouse nests but is a must if your field has rocks.

Bret, I found over the years it was cost effective to pay the price at New Holland. They will not break as easy and you can straighten them by putting a pipe over the guard and pushing down. I always liked the long guards best some people like the short ones the best.

Have a local ag store that carries that kind of stuff. They have a cross ref for the different machines so you get the right guards. They are up to around $8 now so for a 9' mower you will drop a couple hundred bucks.

I have used short rounded ones and long skinny ones. Can't tell the difference but I think the short ones do better as the skid has a higher curve to it and should ride up over obstacles better.

Just like section blades, I think they are different because company x doesn't want to use the same parts as company y.

My 2c,

Mark
