Which plow for a MF35 Perkins Diesel?

I answered a want ad today and looked at a 3-12 MF 62 for $125 and a 3-14 MF 43 for $350 (CDN). The 62 has a broken front coulter disk.

Apart from the missing disk, both plows seem to be in very good condition, greased well and kept indoors.

I understand that the 43 can be adjusted to plow as a 3-12, and of course it has a trip mechanism.
Anyone know how hard it would be to get the 12-14" brace to replace the 14-16" one?

The reason for the sale is the guy bought a new 4WD MF, and finds the category 2 hitch won't fit the 43, so he bought a 3-14 International at an auction.

I go back to pick one up tomorrow evening. Any suggestions?

On the farmer's advice I bought the 3-12, MF model 62. It fits more easily into my trailer than the 72 I bought last year. Nice shape, moldboards greased, it just needs a coulter disk.

Does either have the blacksmith sharpen shares? If so stay away from that plow. The 62 would not have as much trash clearance as the 64 but they both would be good plows and with proper adjustment and ground conditions both will work. and I don't think that is an option to change the 14" to a 12", your only option if taking too much power on either is to remove the back bottom for a 2 bottom

What sort of ground have you got and what are you ploughing? If you've got heavy ground and you are ploughing sod, go for 3x12. If you are ploughing down a lot of residue and have lighter ground go for 3x14. Maybe try the 3x14 and if it's too much, take one furrow off. A broken coulter is an hour with a few wrenches, no big deal. Good Luck.

I'll be plowing well-established sod over loamy, soil with occasional large stones. That's why the trip plow appeals.

This year I've used a battered MF72 3-14 with one moldboard taken off for the gardens and the old-style points will take a fair amount of abuse without breaking, I have noticed.

The current owner of the plows tried the 43 on his MF 4 cylinder diesel tractor and couldn't make it work well in mid-summer in blue clay. I'm wondering if it is an adjustment problem.

How much better is a trip plow than the older style?
