Spike tooth harrow , fertilizing and discing ?

Hi , I happened upon a farm auction today so I thouight I'd stop ror a look-see . There was a good 24t JD baler that went for $200 . The auctioneer bought it because nobody else bid on it , mainly because he started the bidding at $250 . I got the high bid on the spike tooth harrow at $50 . Came home and got the tractor and drug it back the 13 miles to home with no problems . NOW , why did I get a 30 foot spike tooth harrow ?! What are they good for ? Are they used to smooth and level ground after discing ? ( I hope ! ) Because that was my reasoning ! I took soil samples today , will send them in on Monday . I thought I'd disc sometime this week while waiting on the results . OR should I wait for the results and spread fertilizer and lime and then disc then drag then run the cultipacker then seed then pack again ? Thanks for your thoughts ...Randy

By the way , I'm reseeding with orchard grass , timothy , brome and some perenial rye - no alfalfa this time .

We use ours to smooth out the corn feild before planting(can see the marker better, incorporates any top dress fertilizer if we spread it) and this year, we used it after the grain drill when seeding in a new hay feild because one of the 2 cultipackers we drag behind the drill has a busted hitch. Worked great and the feild is really nice & smooth.

we use one or the other, not both. Main benifit for us useing the crushers behind the drill is less trips, but our drag is 24" so it"s not too much extra if we have to. We could also use 2 sections of the drag if we wanted to behind the drill. It"s an old Van Brunt w/ single disk openers, 12" w/ 2 hitches mounted on the back for pulling 2 crushers at once. One of them has a long wood pole on it so they don"t hit on a corner.

I use my spiked tooth harrow to smooth the ground after plowing. Nothing compares to it.

Hi txgrn , I've been looking on iron search for spike harrows and it appears that I done good with the purchase price . I don't know . It's 30' wide 5 section on a cart manual fold chain link type . All sections are adjustable and still work but there's VERY little paint left on this thing that I can find . I'd like to know the manufacturer but I probably never will . It has yellow wheels AKA : John Deere but it has red paint on the very edge of the front hitch channel . I can't tell with all the mold all over it but it looks like the main frame may have been some color green . It has cast tines that are bolted to the round bars and the adjusting ( towers ) for lack of a better term are cast also with links between the bars that resemble a double triangle with the points together . The wheels fold back to transport and fold perpindicular to the frame in the working mode . It took me a little while to figure out how to fold it out but I figgured out that if I took the pin out of the axle carrier and pull them out a short way and re-pin them then back the tractor up that the wings would unfold sort of so I could put the pull bars in the front one side at a time then un-pin the axle again and back up some more so the wheels straighten out to the working position which is in front of the frame . It's some work but then what isn't when using older than dirt equipment ? Sorry for the long post I get carried away when I start typing . Thanks for the answer and if you have a guess as to what this one might be let me know because I need 15 tines replaced . ...Randy

Sounds alot like ours, I forget what it is off hand, but it aint Deere or Massey. Ours is 24', 4-6' sections, our other one was a 20' w/ 4-5' sections. 5 pipes w/ the cast teeth that are threaded and go through the pipe, w/ nut & washer on the end. About 3" Square tube that everything mounts to, 3" channel iron runs up to the hitch. A chain goes to either wing to keep them from going too far.

If I read your post right, you said the wheels are like John Deere Yellow, but it has a red colored paint on a part. It could be a Massey-Feruguson. The old Massey-Ferguson Implements prior to the 1970s(?)or there abouts were red with yellow tire rims. I am not sure if they made these though. I hope this is a decent enough clue.
