Over Run Clutch??

Just curious as to how many of you guys use an overrun clutch on your PTO powered implements, regardless if the PTO is live or not?
(Bush hog, mowing machine, baler, etc.)

You fellas can use them if you really don't mind NOT having full control of your equipment....

I myself will NOT use an over-running device on my non-live PTO for chopping...I can always get it to STOP anytime--and in a hurry, too---by hitting the clutch and BRAKES...

Nothing worse than needing to KILL the Mower, and only be able to sit and watch it keep running. I keep hearing how the mower "pushes" the tractor...it will NOT..IF you have any brakes...!! I use a 6' Bush Hog on my JD "B" and don't seem to ever have any problem..maybe it is because I Learned how to operate it in the 1st place... How many of these questions are coming from novices that have no real experience operating older equipment..?? On the old AC "60" combine, you HAD to stop the combine before any rock could get up the canvas to the threshing cylinder...on replace the cylinder bars...!!! I wonder what an over-running clutch would have been like in that Situation...!!! For me, if a kid innocently approaches in the field, I want to be able to bring that equipment to a STOP at a moment's notice... Ron..

I agree with BushogPapa, I want to stop that mower when I need to. Havent run one for years now but when did was on Farmall H, John Deere B, John Deere A, John Deere AR, and brakes on all would stop it with no truble. No live power on any of them.

It"s not a clutch. It is properly called a Over Rideing Coupler. Of course, you know the benefits of a useing one on a tractor without a live PTO. There is no benefit to useing one with a tractor that has live PTO. I read somewhere, on this board I think, that someone thought they were saving their PTO clutch, by useing an over ride, but that is a fallacy.

I use one on the PTO of my JD430 with a brush hog type mower. Made a world of difference when I put it on. That is the only implement I use that has that type of centrifical force.

I use one with the Farmall H running a rotary mower. Without it the mower would really push the tractor around. Nothing else I have needs it, and I take it off when using a tractor with live PTO.

I used one on my live Ford 960 one time - the silly cpoupler on the moco would not fit onto the tractor, I needed the extention.

Otherwise there is no reason to use an over running coupler on a live pto tractor, it only would be in the way.

Ok, I can see it on the hydraulic independent tractors, which lock up the pto brake way to fast.

Every baler I know of has it built in to the baler?

Much needed for heavy flywheel loads like a brush hog on non-live tractors.

10-4 on the baler Paul,
I don't recall ever seeing one without a clutch built right into the flywheel / driveshaft coupling somewhere...
I had one on my old 9N, but never seen one on any tractor with a live PTO.
Just being dangerous and thinking out loud... : )
