Just replaced all four wooden plunger slides on a model 68 baler. At the same time, removed all the side adjusting set screws & replaced with new.Reinstalled the plunger, it moves freely until you get it back to the very rearmost part of it's stroke. At that point,it appears to bind, and makes a heavy scraping noise. When you watch it move backward and forward,it seems to rock like there's a high spot in the center of the plunger. I've adjusted the set screws on the plunger,it's gotten a little better but it still needs some help. I've also removed the knife, & that also seemed to help.I did find that the left rear corner of the new plunger slide had about 3/16" clearance at the very rear of it's stroke. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

It is normal for those old balers to have bent plunger rails and twisted bale chamber frames. If it nor overly tight, let it go. The wood slides will soon wear in. Believe it or not, I have let some 68's out of the shop that the slides were that tight that smoke rolled out from the bale chamber for a 1/2 hour or so till the wood blocks wore in. Steve

Jon, one more followup: Make sure if your wood slides do cause some smoke that you don't go bale hay till the slides have loosened up. I don't want you to catch your hay on fire. Steve
