Today I would have loved to start chopping bedding, but with the 1" of rain we had I decided to catch up on a few repairs first. I got our haybine put back together (not the JD 800 I was cursing last weekend) w/ some additional parts/sheet metal stolen off our other parts machine, then I managed to finish cutting the swamp I had almost done. After that I finally replaced the bad bearing in our Meyer's wagon that went out last year on the 2nd last load of corn, so now I think we're ready to go on the straw, just as soon as we get the blower set-up, chopper/wagons greased, and sheet metal on the 1600 so it doesn't suck all the dust right through the radiator and plug it up right away. Ain't farming fun?

Also remembered I have to drain the 165's hydraulic oil and clean off the mesh screen on the pump so's the multi-power will wokr again.....

If I get what you are saying...you guys blow straw into the silo for bedding? Is that correct? Never heard of that before...

nope, we blow it into the mow in the barn. One part of the mow is open to the floor below where we take the straw out, then the rest piles up on top. We can fit about 14 loads between our 18' and 16' wagons before it starts blocking the pipe. We just take a board out of the side of the barn on the north end where the straw mow is.

I'll take a few pictures once we have the blower set up.

We had a neighbor who put bedding in the silo and took it out with the unloader. Never did that, but for years we chopped barley straw in the field and blew it into the haymow. Had four doors in the floor, over the center alley, to push straw down into a straw cart. 4x6x4 hi was enough for daily bedding of 70 cows. Key to making it work is : there better be dust flying in the field or the straw is too wet to chop- it will heat in the haymow and can burn the barn down. Don't rush- take 2-3 days to chop 40 acres. Gives it a chance to breathe overnight. If it rains, fluff the windrows before chopping- get rid of all the wet slugs.
