Raking hay for mulch ?

I'm hoping to get mulch for my vegetable garden
from the adjacent field we cut annually.

Does hay from a rye/timothy/clover field make
good vegetable garden mulch, or would it cause
weed problems?

Could an old spring-tooth harrow with the tines
in one row rake it?

Like others said, it sounds like what you are looking for is a dump rake. Probably the ones that the Amish don't have, the yuppies do have, and as for garden ornaments. (Side delivery rakes are getting to big in the middle of Ohio.)

You could also get it baled.

If you found a dump rake out in some field or fenceline for sale, know that there was very little on them to go bad, so it's still probably usable. It'll work better than a cultivator.

Hay makes a good mulch. I use it all the time. Matter of fact I will be cutting about 10 acres in Jan and putting it around my trees. Suggest you spray any weeds first with Round-up. If any weeds come through the hay, spray them lightly with Round-up.

That's all we use for mulch is hay, because we have plenty. I do it the same way as you said, and shoot it with Round-up. I use it in the garden, flower beds and around trees.
I think most people get weeds confused with normal grass regrowth. Some how they get the misconception that any thing green that comes up after you put mulch out is a weed.
The only thing I've found to be both grass and weed free is rice straw, or tree barks.

I believe Fudd is right on the harrow/rake idea.

When you decide to mulch with hay, you're committing yourself to doing it basically forever. ANY hay will be full of weed seeds, and if you mulch one year, and decide not to the next, you'll be up to your eyeballs in weeds. Keeping it mulched will keep the weeds (both from the hay and other weeds) down, keeps the moisture in, and is very beneficial for earthworms, and develops excellent soil as it rots. But ya gotta keep at it.

If you're not ABSOLUTELY sure you want to mulch, I'd buy some straw and try it with that for starters. That way, if you change your mind, you've got some options.

Thanks.

I've been mulching with leaves for a few
years, and they work great. However,
there hasn't been enough time this fall
to collect 3 tons of bagged leaves from
where I live in the city, and haul them
out to my garden in the country.

I think a springtooth would plug up too quickly. If you could find an old dump rake might be the best thing but they are probably hard to find.
