I need to replace the front oil seal on the lower drive shaft. This is the one that is behind the eccentric drive wheel for the sickle bar. I need to know the best way to remove the cast iron drive wheel from the shaft without breaking it. I am also looking for a copy of the operator and maintenance manuals for this model #5.

Dealer should be able to get the seal for you if they don't have it and lots of other #5 parts too are available.

Manuals available from JD dealer or call 800-522-7448 or go JD book store. For the #5 mower you want OMH10156 Operators Manual and PC-466 Parts Catalog.

I think you can cut 2 wood wedges to maybe drive behind the flywheel to loosen it and there was lots of discussion here on that in the past and should be lots more in archives. Just don't hit it with hammer and break it. It is on a taper shaft and will eventually jump right off if patient.

The manuals can be obtained at your JD dealer or on ebay. I go with ebay. There are a lot of them and you can get it cheaper. There were a lot of posts regarding removing that flywheel about a year or so ago. You may want to do a archival search in addition to the info you get here today. Never had to remove one myself but I presume you are having gear oil leaking from the box? Anyhow, nice mowers once mounted on the tractor. Very cumbersome off the tractor. They do a good job if mounted and adjusted correctly.
We cut a lot of hay with our two. Watch your fingers when raising and lowering the bar and if running it before you get manual, make sure to hit ALL the zerks and especially the one where the pitman connects to your flywheel. Good luck!

I need to replace the seal in m #5 also. The square key that is in the wheel is tapered from what I under stand. That needs to be removed first. I've heard of people drillng a hole and threading it to have something to remove it. I think that is the best way and then use a slide hammer to pull it. The wheel is supposed to come right off. If you come up with a part number could you post it.

The part number for the "Crank Wheel" is AZ2082H.

Part number for what? The wheel? AZ2082H is the wheel if I read the book right but it can depend on which mower you have. There were variations.
Shoot me an email and I will look up anything you want. Back late afternoon today.
