What size chisel can I pull with my 4230 without adding a lot of weight. Any brand or model anybody would suggest? I'll be using it in blackland. Thanks.

I've pulled a Graham-Hoemie 7 shank with a 45 hp tractor when I had it weighted. Was more than it wanted in the black dirt. It depends on fast you want to go also.
I have a few relatives down around Hillsboro. I'm about 70 miles north myself.

For deep chiseling or ripping a 7 or 5 shank parabolic chisel. If going to run sweeps or duck bills and sometimes switch to chisels a 10-15 footer depending on how many shanks and spacing. Can use a wider one with sweeps and then pull off some shanks when you switch to chisels. Some new styles to look at: www.bighambrothers.com

I have a 7 shank "Haymie" brand made in Amarillo. It is a drag type, hydraulic activated wheels, and guaranteed to dig....none of this riding up stuff.

It is about 8' wide and the 4230 handles it better than needed. I could use a 10 footer with 2 more shanks and not hurt a thing; maybe more.

Not going to buy a bigger chisel cause of the tractor....don't use it that much.

Gorilla, 1st how much wt are you currently carring? is there liquid ballast in the tire.
If your tractor has fluid in the tires and at least 2 JD wts, then your tractor will easily handle a 13 shank chisel.
So if your tractor has no fluid or cast wt of anykind then I recomend a 9 shank chisel. JD wts are cheap running $45/pair in my country at a local wrecking ysrd. Aftermarket wts can be gotten too. it just takes more effort to install.
I just converted a 4230 from fluid and cast combo wt to all cast wt when we put on a new set of rear tires. Added 300 lbs of aftermarket 3piece cast to the inside of each rear corner. Still need to add 2 more JD wts to the outside on the 2 that are allready there.
We are in Central Texas Blackland drivitive soil too. Hope this helps.
later,
John A.
