Old MOTT hammer knife mower, need some help

I have an old Mott hammer knife mower for my farmall super A and im having some trouble with it. The way that it is set up on my tractor, you can run the mower in either direction, but from what i understand, its supposed to cut against the direction you are traveling, right? when i do this, the mower discharges all the grass clippings out up in front of the mower, and covers the tractor and myself in grass.

My second problem is that when cutting any lengthy grass, the cutter shaft gets bound up with grass right where the bearings are and gets really hot.

Has anyone else had these problems, or know whats wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Got a 4' Mott on my '51 MH Pony. Does the same things. It's not really a bush hog so I try to stay out of the tall stuff. Dad fixed a sheet metal shield along the front to keep from getting covered with clippings that works well. There's a picture of it somewhere on this site from a while back. Sharp blades are always a help. They're still made by an outfit in TN.
