Mornin' Guys,

Need your opinion here.

Original deal was that if I bought the NH 495 swather from my neighbor, he would throw in a second machine for parts..... Oiled up the 495 and greased 'er; worked like a charm and I never even gave the second machine a glance at the time.

So, yesterday, I go and drag the old second machine home. It turns out to be a model 490 and it doesn't look like anything will interchange 'cept maybe the wobble box and the sickel.

Anyway, the serial number is 396368. Anybody know about when it was built? Heck, I think with a little tinkerin', I can get this one running also. Did that auger affair work okay on these models?

Pardon the road dust,

Allan

I have on I used for a number of years until I got a 495. The only reason I replaced it was the rubber on the rolls was comming off and the sprocket teeth were getting thin. It worked good until it wore out.
I bid on one onetime at an aution but dropped out before it sold. Another fella who had pushed up close to the action as if he was hot to bid never did bid but after the 490 sold he came over to me and said" I've got one of them in my barn I'd sell for what you dropped out at if you want to come look at it. Farmers are wiley critters some of 'em.

490 was made from 1970 to 1975. It uses the same 9ft rolls as the current 488. If I recall it was the immediate predecessor the your 495, and was replaced to gain the cross over type reel which eliminates the auger. You'd have to get your local dealer to look up in his PAL system how much of it will interchance. When I left the blue tractor/red implement dealer CNH was taking about releasing a "consumer" version of the PAL discs, but I don't know if they ever did.

Your dealer should also be able to search the warranty system for the serial number which will bring up the date of production, the original selling dealer, who it was sold to, any warranty or update campaigns that were done to it etc. Although it may be old enogh that the data wasnt entered when they computerized the records.

Hi Allan , How do you come across such deals ? That one free piece of equipment looks better than almost everything I've paid good money for ! WC Fields had ME pegged :( . But I'm confused , if the last two pictures are of the same machine why does it need an auger if it has full width rolls ? Take care ...Randy

Well,

Sounds like you did better on your packer than I did. Been looking two years and finally accidently stumbled across one fer $1100 plus freight.

That stings a little. :>(

Allen, I too share your desire to invest only as much as is required in equipment but I have found that a backup unit is a wonderful thing when your primary has seen better days as well even though it is doing the job you want....

Never been afraid of a little rust LOL

Jerry,

That was kinda my thoughts.

If I grease 'er up and oil the chains; maybe work the PTO shaft over a little, I just might give 'er a twist and see what happens.

Who knows? Those old NHs are pretty tough old devils. :>)

Dunno... But how do you keep the grass from growing up under your equipment... Nice loooking row of equipment and no weeds/grass 3 feet tall around them....

You must have too much free time to move them and actually mow under/around them....

LOL! Hi Joe,

Welcome to the great American desert with it's very limited amount of rainfall.

I mowed that on the 24th of June. More than likely, 'spose I'll have to do it again next year too. :>)

Idon't know if this is correct but I was told that if you have say a 460 it was made in 1960. If you have a 479 its was made in 1979. So if this is right a 490 would have been made in 1990. But as I said I don't know if that is really true

Looks like a combine head or something stuck on a pull type frame! Big stuff out there!
