Hello all,

I"m getting an extremely late start on baling this year (long story), and I"ve run into big issues with my knotters.

I just took the baler out of storage and was cleaning and greasing her up for a short run of bales for my neighbor. I decided to test the knotter operation by cycling the baler by hand before I left and I found out that the safety latch wasn"t coming out of the bale chamber in time to miss the plunger. To remedy this problem I had to lengthen the rod that attaches the knotter mechanism to the needle yoke by 3 turns.

Everything looks good so I go to take her into the field and I"m missing EVERY knot!!! Last year before I put it away the left side wouldn"t miss one in 100 and the right side would miss one in 20. I grabbed my manual and loosed up my twine disc tension, loosened up the bill hook tension and sharpened the knives and it now ties every knot, but they aren"t tight enough and they pull out when the bale expands.

What adjustment is there to make a tighter knot? I checked in the manual and they had me look at the bill hook jaw for a sharp point. But neither of my bill hooks had a sharp point.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!

Hi I'm not , by any stretch of the imagination , an expert on balers but I had the same problem with my 14t that I had just bought . It turned out to be to tight a bale . And dirty knotters . I had pressure washed it after I bought it and greased it up good incuding the knotters . Grease got in places it wasn't supposed to be . It tied every bale , bales made it to the ground OK , but when we went to pick up the bales to load them they exploded , both knots pulled loose at the same time ! The bales weighed over 80 lbs ! Good thing I was only testing the baler on junk hay . Asked questions here and got a lot of good advice and the problem went away . Still have heavy ( to my wife ! ) bales - 36" and about 35lbs . Nothing I want to do about it though , she needs the workout ;) . Also the knotters might just need more knotting time to polish up so put more hay though it before you start adjusting things if it hasn't been used for a year and everything was working right before you parked it . I don't know if this is good advice or not but that's what happened here . ...Randy

A lot of tieing problems can also be due to making too tight a bale. Try loosening your bale chamber adjusters and running a few bales through to polish up the chamber.

On my old baler I had trouble with the thing tying a knot but the twine was so loose it'd "bounce" the knot open by the time it exited the chamber. Tightened the twine tension a bit and it went away.

Twine is probaly pulling out of twine disc before knot is completed. try tighting your twine disk 1/4 turn, then make about 50 bales until it gets better. Also, you may want to run you needles up by hand to check needle/twine disk clearance. I highly suggest going to a Agco/hesston/challenger dealer and getting the small pamphlet they carry that has basic knotter info. Helped me immensly. Remember, 95% of all knotter problems are tension related. Double check your twine box, guides, rub points, etc. for anything abnormal.
