Can some one give me a run through on the repair of the over running clutch on a NH 469 mine went belly up this eve.
How big of a job is it? This some thing I can do in the field? Been one of those years so far. Every thing has broke at least once.

Kelly, I run a Ford 535 haybine (built by Owatonna for Ford). I blew out the overrunning clutch. My Agco dealer had Gehl parts that bolted right in (I believe Gehl inherited Owatonna).

Anyway...probably no chance it's the same but just an idea...

The 535 was built by New Idea, whatever came after the 535 was made by owatonna. We've got a 535 parts machine and a NI that we currently use. I also have heard the same machine was sold as a Massey, but I dunno.

I'm sure the clutch was used by several manufacturers for many different machines vs. makeing a different clutch for every machine.

Kelly, the fix is simple. Weld those two pieces together and you will never have trouble with it again. I'm very serious about this. All newer haybines no longer have a over running clutch anyway. Steve

Ok. Thats what I am going to do. I had read your comments about this before. but you atated to move the clutch until the pins were in contact before welding it. Obviously I dont have those pins any longer so was not sure a weld alone would hold it.

I am going to also take that 461 to a mechanic to fix it as I have no time. This no mower thing messed all my plans up for the hay this weekend. Seems to be happining quite a bit this year.

I had an old Ford that I welded up as you mentioned. One of my tractors is Independent PTO and it snaps in place. You can't feather it like the hand lever on JD or like a live pto clutch pedal on a Ford.

Now I realize that the overrun clutch has nothing to do with what I'm talking about as it is used powering down, but.....

I worry that the force on the pto of getting the flywheel rolling will tear it up. I do idle down when I shift, but the operators manual says move it quickly forward to engage. It's basically a 2 position switch (lever).

Just seems like a lot of wear on the tractor. You can hear the clutches click as they are grabbing.

Your opinion?

 Stop motor, engage PTO, start motor (maybe that wi in reply to txgrn, 08-05-2005 04:41:30  
If the starter will take the torque it might be better to engage PTO with motor off then fire it up. We had a Leyland that was terrible about engaging the PTO if the motor was spinning. Never seemed to bother the starter when we started it with PTO engaged and 7' bushhog hanging off the back. Come to think of it, the 7' rotovator never bothered it either. YMMV

Yes I do. What machine is this? A Baler? You speak of a flywheel. If it is a baler, I do NOT recomend eliminating the over-running clutch. As long as it is a mowing machine, then I am ok with it. Steve

Steve is right, I have a 488 which is darn near the same as your 469, and it doesn't have an over-running clutch.

Say Kelly - Off topic but anyway - I have an old flatebed (whopping 10' long at the moment) - do you put inner tubes in the radial car tires you were using - I klnow in cars and high speed they say this is a NO NO but on wagons does it matter

They make tubes rated for use with radials. I always use them with the used tires & old rims.

ROLF gosh I need to proof read this stuff 1st. Almost as bad as when I type O'ed my IH Disk.
