Can somebody tell me what a "rockshaft" is on a 720 John Deere?

Rockshaft on Deeres is a horizontal shaft attached to rear of tractor, above the differential housing, parallel and a little behind axle. Has square shafts protuding on either side. May be used to lift/lower 3pt hitch, rear cultivator gangs, etc. Hydraulic cylinder and other parts are internal to housing attached to rear of tractor.

The rockshaft is the shaft that raises and lowers the 3 point lift arms on the tractor.

Not sure what a JD 720 is but I believe it's the horizontal shaft on a cultivator that is part of the system to lift and drop it.

That's right, also used on the new generation tractors. It mounts to the tractor frame, ahead of the engine, behind the radiator, extends through the tractor from one side to the other. There is another bracket which mounts further back on the frame, and allows you to mount a hydraulic cylinder between the rear bracket and the rockshaft. The front mount cultivator is then attached to the rockshaft. This how the cultivator is raised and lowered. In some applications, the hydraulic clyinder was not used, but instead a long bar was attached to the rockshaft and then to the rear 3 point lift arms.
