Is a New Holland 479 mower conditioner a good machine? And what is a fair price to pay for one in good condition?

The best. However, 479's are getting old. We bought a new one in 1978 & it was an old model then. The 488 seems to be about the same as the 479 that it replaced. 479 maybe heavier here & there. Used ours a couple hundred acres a year til the discbine kind of took over. Sold it in May. Got a near new 488 to save the discbine some!

Well if its built any thing like my 460 its good but most any of the NHs are good. Could have gotten a 479 last6 summer for $1000 but figured I'd put $200 in my 460 and saw $800.

I have a disc mower right now but am thinking about selling it to save money and I'd also like to condition my hay as I cut. An older retired farmer from church has this thing sitting in his barn and I am gonna take a look at it.

I have a 479 that is seeing its 33rd season and still going strong. I think they're one of the best that N.H. ever made. I believe the 479 was designed by engineers that were not over-ridden by "bean counters" who would try to cut costs at every opportunity. Every machinery company used to put out rugged, top quality machines before economics 101 got to be more important. Sorry for the rant, but I'll stand by what I've said !
