Howdy fellas...I have a chance to pick up a nice looking IH 430T Bailer for about $600.00. I have never bought a bailer before and was wondering what key things I should look for, and what questions I should ask. Thanks for any help...Randy

I am vey knowledgeable on ih balers and the 430 was a good one. Check the usual wear parts on balers or have a friend do it for you. the 430's had several types of knotters and they at best will miss a few bales. many parts from other ih balers will fit.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. One more question if I may...I know it's a real advantage to have LPTO when running a baler, but will a good old farmall M handle that size baler? I figure it would maybe be a little too much for an H.

Randy, I agree with other advice to test run it; if possible throw some hay through it and inspect the knots and such. Does the owner have any manuals? How long has he owned it? Copy down the exact model number and serial number. I am in process this weekend of dragging home a 430W. Email me if you are interested in Operator Manual, Repair Manual, and/or Parts Manual.

I have a 430 all twine bought it used has been a excellant bailer.But theirs so many expensive parts on a bailer and usually the dealer has to order the parts you need when theirs hay to get bailed.You need to bail with it before you buy it or know the person thats selling it.

Most important question to ask;

"Can I see it run?"

Most important thing to check;

"If your friend who knows balers can come with ya."

Seriously (actually I wasn't joking) There is so much that can be a problem and make a good looking baler worthless, you really need to have some experance go with ya to look at it.

Personally I look for recent use, as in not full of old hay. Look for lots of shiny new parts. Not necessarlly a good thing, they may have given up fixin it. If it is "field ready", have them take it out for a spin or at least spin it. Bent, broken, repaired, quallity of said repairs, missing parts, welded, loose items, etc. can tell a lot about a machime.

At 600 it may not be worth the trouble to have it check out by a dealer, but then again in the end it might be.
