Found a JD 260 that has been cracked open and needs either a bearing or new gear( I would find out which one by talking to the right guy). $500 as is.

Is fixing a disc mower a rocket launch or something that a person of modest mechanical means could accomplish themselves?

When they have needed to be opened it is too late for the machine. If you want to buy one you can repair easily stick with a New Idea. They are simple. I have had a 260, bought new. It was a good machine. Ran it so much that I wore the skid plates out. I wore so many, so fast that I started welding cold roll rods for skid bars on the new skid plates so that they would last longer. Never had to put a bearing in or replace anything more than the skid plates and knives. But I would never think of opening one up. When I traded it, it needed a bearing. I traded for a Vermeer. Bad mistake. They are too heavy. Don't like them. Now I have an old New Idea that I bought used for $1500 and a JD 265. Good buys.

I agree the steel top Vermeer mowers are too heavy. This is where the lawyers engineered the weight in the mowers for safety. The new style 30 series has a Kevlar curtain are much lighter. Look for the Hay Max disc mowers next season using the hex shaft drive Lely style cutterbar. Lower HP demands with a stronger & lighter 3 point design that is thousands of $$$ less than a Vermeer, New Idea, Kuhn, Krone,& John Deere
If some one is considering a used disc mower why not consider a NEW drum mower for about the same money. For less than $3000, you can have the new cutting technology of disc mower for close to half the price.

And you can fix 'em right up since you make them.

I would go for it, at least if you rebuild it you will know you have a good machine,if you just buy a used one the gear box could go out the first time you use it.

Joe, Be sure gear box is OK. About $1000 if you have to replace the whole thing, no fun repairing either. I think $500 is enough to pay for a disc mower in need of repair. As other posts say, alot of labor involved in repair.

bought my gehl cheap cause of a bad bearing. it was a job. you need two people at certain parts or a over head hoist. not a hard job, just takes time. the halves are heavy once you get it split.

Joe,
That's pretty cheap for a disc mower - even a broken one!
I've helped a guy down the road tear apart both a 9' NH and a 10' Vermeer to replace lower bearings on a couple of pots. (don't remember the model numbers)
Not hard to do mechanically, but time consuming and a little frustrating when you forget to put something back in and have to pull the thing completely back apart again. But... what isn't??
