New Holland Stuff

First of all, we have a new holland 489 9' haybine. have trouble with hay material getting stuck between guards and sickle teeth. this causes hay to not get cut. what ground speed should this model be able to run under various speeds?

Second New Holland 316 square baler. have lots of trouble with string breaking when bales of twine get switched, tye square not between bales, but rarely goes through. Really like the new holland equipment, but spend to much time on these problems. I know you guys have the info i need, please share, thank you! Mike

Mike, when material is stuck in around the cutterbar, there is only one thing to do. Renew the blades and the guards. I know this is expensive, but there is no other way around it. Your problem comes from worn out guards and or knife blades. As for the 316, either replace the needles or weld the groove that has worn in the end of the needle shut. Steve

Hi , Since I'm not familiar with the New Hollands does the cutterbar use holddown clips to keep the sections tight to the guards ? If so would removing the knife and sharpening it and adjusting the holddowns be a quick ( less expensive ) fix to finish out the season ? I'm not trying to second guess Steve , I really don't know and since I was going to upgrade from the International 990 I have now I want to find out as much as I can about different machines . If the only way to improve the cutting action of a New Holland is to replace everything then I might shy away from them because that's too high maintenance dollar wise for me . Thanks for not getting upset with me ;) ....Randy

You can try all that. It can help some. Sharpening underserrated sections won't help much, but dull smooth sections can be improved. If the ledger surfaces of the guards are rounded and generally worn out, it doesn't matter if they are NH, IH, Deere, Ford or Oliver, they are junk.
