3pt Hay Rake: convert to Engine PTO?

Can I convert a 3pt ground PTO hay rake to work off of the 540 engine PTO? I picked up a Ferguson DEO 20 3pt rake, the PTO has a 5.5" pulley and the rake has an 18" pulley. I need to use it on a Ford 651 tractor that only has engine PTO.

Is there a way to successfully convert the ground PTO rake to engine PTO use? It appears that a pulley as small as about 3.5" will fit on the PTO pulley mount, if I can find one, which (if my math is right) will slow the rake wheels almost 40%. Not sure if that will be slow enough . . .

What is the target rpm for the rake arm wheels to be turning? Thanks for any input!

Since your tractor has live hyd but not live pto, a hyd motor & flow controller would make for one niffty rake for you.

Why would you want to run at 540 pto rpm? Keep your engine speed down & use a faster gear - if you want to use the pto. That will give you a slower pto speed for starters.

Why not consider using a hydraulic motor. That way you could get exactly the basket speed you need plus having the benefit of reversing the motor and tedding with the rake.

Hi Bill, had one of those Ferguson 3pt rakes once. We used it on a red belly Ford and it worked great. Traded Ford for JD 420U that didn't have ground drive PTO and you couldn't rev the engine above 1200 RPM or the rake would flail all the leaves off the hay.

If I remember correctly JD 420U 540 PTO RPM was at 1850 engine RPM, so some simple math and the pulley on the end of the PTO shaft would have to be about 2/3 the size if you wanted to run your engine at rated 540 PTO RPM.
