There was a 493A Corn and Cotton Planter - I have the parts manual for it. If you need some parts info from it - please let me know.

Are you sure that it's not a 495A? As I remember, the 494A was a drill type planter. And the 495A could hill drop or drill plant. I owned both models at one time, but I really can't remember that much about them.

How can you tell the model of the planters?

Deere never made a 493 model. The 495 had a chain drop and was a drill type only. There was a chain in the boot of the planter similar to what is used in the 7000 and up except it was a steel chain with steel paddles. Most seed corn producers used the 495 since it gave a much better seed spacing. The 495 was usually equipped with disk openers unlike the 494 which used a shoe type runner.

JD made a 493A planter. Go to jdparts.deere.com and check out the parts book for yourselves. It's there and listed as a cotton planter. My manual catalog says there were two different operators manuals for the 493A. OMB25385 & OMB25361 ( -1967) and parts catalog PC-800. There was also 490, 494, 494A, 494AN, 495, 495A, 495AN. You can get the manuals from JD dealer or call 800-522-7448.
