I got possesion of an A-24 McCormick sickle mower that hasn"t seen a wrench or a rag in probably 25 years. There are several parts on it that I"m wondering if they need replaced. The main ones I"m concerned about are the "knife clips" and the "wear plates". At least thats what the manual calls them. How can you tell if these are worn beyond their useful life? Its obvious that some of the knife clips are worn, I just don"t know when is too much.
Thanks.

The knife clips which are sometimes called hold down clips, need to hold the knife flat on the guards. Most of them can be bent some to compensate for wear. The wear plates keep the knife from wearing the cutter bar. If they were to wear through then the knife would ride on the cutter bar and wear it. If they are badly worn they should be replaced. Most farm stores should have or could get the hold downs and wear plates in a universal fit style.
