501 mower bearing question

I recently replaced the belt on my Ford 501 sickle mower (which made a world of difference) and the bearings that hold the pully opposite where the pto attaches had a little play. The pully shaft could be jiggled back and forth a bit. It rotated smoothly but the looseness concerned me. Are the bearings going out or is this normal? If the bearings need to be replaced how do I go about it? Is the shaft supposed to just slide out? I smacked it a couple times with a hammer, not too hard, and it didn't budge. Anyway, if this is something about to fail, I want to take care of before next years hay cutting.

Keep them well greased, you should be O.K. I was using my 501 last year,I started hearing a noise.Thought"I'll just keep going, something will break and I'll know where the sqeaky noise came from." It was the bearing on the pitman pin that was dry of grease ,I kept going till it melted and literally fell off.$200 later{pitman pin, bearings and seals} I was going again,HOWEVER I tapped in a grease nipple on that screw on cap so now I can give it grease easy. And I check and feel if any of the bearings are getting hot every half hour or so.Also have it fairly loose. The bearing I think you are talking about is easy to tighten(cotter pin, castellated nut} There is a grease nipple on the side that gives it grease but just take it apart and check the bearings before it's next use.Hope this helps.Ilove my 501!
