I am looking to buy a new big square baler. I currently have a JD 100 and have had nothing but grieve. What is the best kind? I am leaning to a Hesston 4760. Does anyone know about plugging of the packer? My JD has a slip clutch on the packer so when it plugs I can easily unplug it. Hesston? We feed hay into a TMR and my dealer says you do not need a precutter I think we do. Will the hay break up in a TMR? Any problems with the Hesston,CIH,orNH. I have had numerous problems with the JD so I know no problems can be as bad as the ones weve had. The new Krone baler looks pretty good but what about service, parts and resale value? Any help is appreciated. Thanks Dave

"Don"t know where you"re located but for info on big square balers go to www.bigbalerusa.com. This is Livingston Equipment in Chickasha Oklahoma, home of the world"s largest Hesston big square baler dealer in the world. Ask for Steve Norvel. He"s got the experience to answer all your questions.

I am currently looking at 1997 deere 100. What kinds of problems are you having? I knew that they where not as good as some other brands, but I thought it might make a good introductory machine for me. Can I asume you would suggest that I not buy one?

I would look for a cutter unit if i were making the investment in a big baler to make hay to go into a TMR. Even if it is not an absolute necessity, it will have to help on wear and tear as well as mix quality. If you have good local service for Hesston that is the most popular and reliable brand in North America whether it is in Hesston or CaseIH colors. NH BB series balers are quite good, older NH's less so.

What type of TMR do you have? If it is a horizontal mixer the precutter is preferred. If it's a verticle then I don't think it'll make much difference.

You might try asking this question over at the agriculture.com boards. There may be more experience over there.

We have no large square balers in our area. There are between 400-500 large square balers sold in North America. I hear good things from the Krone & Class balers but NH & Hesston are the big 2 in that market. The older model JD's made by Krone were dogs. The Krone people told me that models they built for JD had n pre-chamber. Realize you know more about large square balers than I do. I only know the sales figures for the MFG's.
