Went and picked up the #5 today. Definately a well used piece of equipment. Well, took it to the carwash and $5 bucks later, I could see much green paint and other stuff under where the gunk used to be.
I opened the hole to check the condition of the oil in the PTO Chain Housing (Z1038H), and to my surprise, it was packed with grease. No; not black, gooped up, cruddy, gritty old oil, but honest to goodness grease. And pretty good grease at that...
Anybody care to venture a guess on the purpose of this? In my limited knowledge of this mower, I have ONE IDEA why this is full of grease instead of oil. Perhaps the seals got to leaking, and grease was used instead new seal?
This mower is months away from the field, so I will take my time and make it right as I go. I put this message in the tool talk forum also, so if this looks familiar you aren't looseing it...

As others have said, some folks put grease in when the seals start to leak. Some even put in a mix of oil and grease. If the seals continue to fail, you get self changing lube!

Well Tom I don"t know if this will help you but you just helped me! I just got through servicing a 5 ft Howse I have had for a couple years that was given to me by my mom in law. I"m positive this thing had never been hit with a grease gun as the rear wheel had never ever had grease. Checked the gear box and it had grease in it from the factory, nice and clean like your saying. My guess would be this thing is about 8 or 9 years old. HTH Richard

A lot of new brush hogs come with a book that says fill with 90 W SAE oil or fill with grease.
I run a lube testing lab and greases are often much better than oils for applications like you have described. You have no high speed and hardly any load bearing needs to meet with the mower. It will be just fine.

Bob, I did, thank you so much. I found a parts manual also (for less than an arm), and still I'm looking for the Service manual, in the mean time, I have sure used that parts list. Thanks again!

Well, if there is a leak, the easy way to find out will be to let it run to get the grease hot and liquidy, then you will notice if there is a leak to be worried about. Another possibility is just a person't preferance. I know a guy that has a mowing business that puts grease in all of his batwings, reguardless of leaks. He says that when he gets a new mower, he uses a backhoe to tip it up to drain the oil and fills it with grease. Grease is better than gear oil because if it leaks, it will still leave some residue on the bearings and gears so they can go for a few hours without damage once the box is empty as opposed to about 20 minutes, if that with an oil filled box. This is what I know about it. I don't have any proof that grease is bad for a gearbox. NH used it fromt he factory in their tedders (made by khun). Never had a gear box with grease sieze up, only with oil. Good luck with your new mower,

Thanks for the responses yall. I appreciate it a lot. I found a lot of question marks after I finished spraying off the goop and gunk with a car wash wand before I unloaded it out back of the house.
Did I mention I am in the Army, and live in Government quarters on Ft Knox, KY? You shoulda seen some of the looks I got driving around last day and a half with a 7 foot cycle bar sticking up over the cab. That was kinda fun after all.
