My brother brought home a New Holland 269, that is in very good shape, even though it is 40 years old. There is a large belt on the knotter side though, which worries me. Has anyone experienced trouble with these belts? Any other noted problems? Thanks!

I bought a 269 used about 30 years ago, and have used it yearly. The belt is a non-issue as long as it isn't worn out- (rounded from wear). I'd recommend getting a manual. If you have a problem with banana shaped bales, one can get most of the problem fixed by adjusting the travel of the feeder forks as per the instructions. Also, try to feed the hay in at the far side of the pick-up, and make sure all the hay dogs (2 on to & 1 on the bottom) are in place. Resistance bars in the bale chamber may be helpful as well. Mike

I have one that my Dad and Uncle bought new, as far as I know it still has the original belt.
