I am looking to cut our own grass hay. I have an opportunity to purchase a Ford 501 or a JD No 5. Have looked at both, and both have been cared for well, it appears. The JD is $350 less than the Ford. Any thoughts on the good, bad, use or value of the Ford vs. the JD?? Thanks!

I don't know much about the 501, but I've had a JD 5 for 3 years and it's been a good mower. Alot depends on what kind of hitch your using. I had the best luck with mine when I ran it off the drawbar on my Farmall M, although it ran well on the 3 point on my 3020 it was a pain to set it up. They are a good reliable mower, and parts are still available, parts machines are relatively easy to come by as well. The owners manual is a must, it just makes things easier. Hope this helps.

What kind of tractor are you gonna use? My 501 uses a 3 pt hitch, and is a good little mower. Dad had a JD #5, and it used the drawbar off his Farmall A with no hydraulics to lift the sickle bar. There was a hand lever to lift the sickle. I have cut lots of hay with both. In my opinion the choice would revolve around your type of tractor and how much work will be needed to get the mowers into field condition.

What kind of tractor (specifically 3 point hitch vs. drawbar) are you gonna use? I like my 501 combined with a 3 pt hitch 40 horse tractor. Dad used to use a JD #5 pulled by the drawbar of his Farmall A, and we cut a lot of hay with both.

I thought my first message got lost in cyberspace. Hopefully my opinions didn't differ too radically between messages! J Babcock

Don't have either mower mentioned, but do have a Ford 515. A little heavier than the 501 and has a wobble box in place of the pitman arm. I like the wobble box much better than anything with a pitman as you can mow from -15 degrees to +45 degrees from level with no problems. The wobble box lets the sickle bar adjust to very uneven terrain and there's no broken pitman arm.
It works for me - may not for smeone else...

Illinois Boy!!

I have Ford 515 that I think is missing an important part; the part that allows the sickle bar to drop below grade. I think it is a chain and spring that attaches to the drawbar. Do you have any photos of your set-up? I have the manual, but would appreciate seeing (and learning) how this mower attaches! Thanks.

Just saw the sentance - "for $350 less"...
Don't know what prices are like in your neck-o-the-woods, but around here, $350 will buy you a nice mowing machine. They'd both be overpriced in this area...

Yea, that $350 figure jumps out at me too. I just paid 250 for a #5. I have seen them around that price tag often around here (Tennessee/Kentucky).
I like the #5. Enough to want another one in fact. Honestly, I think I need another one for parts and what not. I am not plum sure I got the best end of this deal....
