Can you still get the telescopeing (inside) square PTO shaft anywhere? I have the part numbers in my owners manual on pg 53. Would one from Tractor Supply fit? Also, the support on the front of the mower that holds it up off the ground when disconnected from the tractor, I can't find a part # for it. Thanks again in advance! I go pick it up Sunday, so then my questions will REALLY begin.

You can get the shafts and other parts for the square drive PTO from Valu Bilt parts. They're on the WEB.

Mine was missing that part as well and I went to a Deere dealer and they said it was no longer available. I bought a new 1 inch square pto shaft and a weld on U joint end for mine and cut it off at an ideal length for use on my IH M farmall. Very good mowers and very quiet.

I got an owner's manual off of ebay last year for about $5.00. It also has an illustrated parts section. I'd recommend looking for one. It also shows, in detail, how to hook the mower up to a wide variety of tractors, including other makes.

You can get a new manual from Deere by calling 1-800-522-7448. It's #OMH10156, @ $30.00.

They made that mower for MANY years, and I believe there were a number of PTO variations, so you'd either have to find a used one, or take the part you have and try to match it up. It would be GREAT, for safety, if the whole driveline could be replaced with a modern shielded unit, but I believe the back "U" joint bolts to the gearcase input shaft which is square, making it tough to find something modern to fit, plus the safety slipclutch is in that driveline. You'll probably have to stick with the original style, and be SURE to keep the "tunnel shield" in place!

Thanks for all the responses. I am glad yall are around, cause I got a feeling I will be using a great deal of "help me out" emails and posting before the end of the line. I have an owners manual, and I am looking for an affordable parts and service manual too, if anybody has one that isn't so crazy expensive, give me a shout and maybe we can come to an agreement...

I have a number 5 I have had and used for years. Haven't used it the last few as I got a #8. The PTO shaft on mine is large compared to the #8. Several years ago I picked up a used operator's manuel for it at a tractor show. It was an old manuel and had the parts book in the back along with inllustrations of hook ups to various tractors. Should be some of these in salvage yards but usually the stand goes fast. There were 2 types of stands used. The older type was flat metal while the newer one was a hollow tube with a foot on it. There should also be a flat metal piece on the sickle side that holds that side up. One problem is remembering to put that one up before you try to raise the sickle. If you don't you break something.
