I just had the top roller bearing on the outside go bad on my NH479 haybine again. This is the 3rd one in 4 years. Anybody got an idea what could be causing this. A second question - there is a sprocket that has to come off on the end of the shaft and it is held in with a wedge. The end of the wedge has a lip and I've tried prying it out without luck. Anyone have an idea how to get the wedge out.

Charlie, my guess is you may have either a bent roll or the two rolls set too close to each other. Turn the rolls by hand and see if they touch each other at any time. If so, you'll need to add shims under the top roll to raise it a little. As far as the sprocket, it is held in place with a tapered key. The only way to remove the key is to first hit in on the sprocket, moving it inward towards the roll. That will loosen the key so you can pull it out and then you can remove the sprocket. Steve

Thanks for the advice - anothe question. Don't the rolls have to run tight together to crush the hay? Could I be tightening the tightners too much to be causing the problem.

Just reread your post, I guess were talking about different type of bearing altogether. Mine is a ball bearing

Just replaced that bearing on my 114 hydroswing this afternoon. It was my first time. I had trouble with real tough stringing, way over fertilized fescue wrapping around the ends of the rolls about 150 acres ago. It was creating alot of heat so I figured I may have damaged a bearing. Anyway, as I installed the new bearing and housing I was sure not to "load" the bearing. That simple ball bearing is made for only radial load not lateral. In other words make sure the inner race is in position before tightening the housing onto the side of the machine. I hope this explanation makes since, not sure if that is your problem though. As for the wedge, it sounds like a tapered key. Mine is not made like that but to remove you must drive the sproket further onto the shaft. Then remove the key and full the sproket back off. I learned that in a very naieve and difficult way. I hope that is some help for you.
Matt
