Rnd Baler Belt Lacing

Redoing the belts on my JD 435...and the labor cost for attaching the lacing to the belts is quite high...so, was considering buying a lacing tool and doing it myself. While searching the net, I came across a lacing by Minet called "MS 25 Hinge Fastener for round-baler belts." These laces are attached to the belt via hardened, self-drilling, self-locating screws" Anyone every tried these and are they worth a hoot...also, where can they be purchased?

The standard clipper hooks and belt lacing vice will work as well as anything, but there are couple tricks to lacing belts that you need to know. First of all, you need to make two small angle (45 degrees) cuts on the edges of the trailing end of the belt. This avoids having a sharp edge which can catch on the baler belt spacers. Second, when you install the lacing leave the ends fairly long about 2" or so and tuck them under all the way so hardly any loop is sticking out. The trick to getting them to tuck under easily (I know this sounds crazy) is to take a small propane (mapp gas works best) torch and heat a regular nail until its red hot on the end (holding it with a vice grips of course). Shove the hot nail under the clipper hooks about the same length as the ends you left. What this does is cut a trail in the belt, under the clipper hooks making it easy to tuck the lacing under the cipper hooks, giving a real nice tight splice with nothing sticking out to catch. This method was thought up by some old farmer and has been proven to work time after time.

Shoup has the Clipper lacing and vice lacer tools. These are like the ones origionaly used. I bought the tools and paid for it in lacing two or three belts.

My local Ag store had the wires and crimper for my belts. Not cheap, but cheaper than the Alligator Rivet fastening tool in the Ex-Cel Catalog.....www.excelbelting.com.

If you ever have belts laced with alligator type lacing you won't go back to old style wire lacings. I won't as alligator last longer than older type lacings.Tx Jim

I agree my man. Any new belt I buy will have it. But the crimper in the catalog I referred to was $500..... ..... ...

bought a deere lacer from deere for less than 200 txgrn boy them laces are nice i change pins every 500 bales..the old style i was changing every 300 bales and still the ends would pull out..have never had end pull on these yet, know on head (harder than wood)....have nice day may god bless

Gents...thanks for the replies...but what I was curious if you have tried these Minet MS 25 lacings, as they are very similar to the alligator lacings in design, except they attach with screws that go all the way through the belt versus the rivets and require no special tool. Can't seem to find the link right now, or I would post it...

Only thing I can think of is that a rivet; the rivets used in gator lacing are flat topped both sides so they roll right over your rollers.

Dunno how you can get a screw and nut to do that but the idea sounds good.

I suspect if you price them, it will be the same as the labor you are trying to save.... Don't know tho if you can't provide any info on them, never heard of that particular brand.
