Hello, what size tractor would I need to power a New Holland 326 square baler?. This baler is equipped with a model 70 thrower.

We have a 310 with a 70 thrower, running a JD 3020(70 hp) and any type of incline and she's workin pretty good

I don't believe with the bale thower you'll be satisfied with its preformance with a less than 50+hp tractor. Since thrower means wagon even with that you may come up wanting if you ground is rolling. Also remember that some of these bale wagons are pretty good sized.

Well I suppose you could run it with under a 60HP tractor but you wouldn't be able to run it at max capacity. I tried the nieghbors CIH 885 (72hp) on one of my 278's and sure it had the HP to run it but you could feel it. The tractor was kind of on the light side so you were rock'n and roll'n pretty good.

Personally I like at least a 80 hp tractor for that size of baler.

Been looking to trade off my old JD 14T baler for something newer, but my current "big" tractor is an IH 484 (38 pto HP), now it handles that 14T super easy, but I know old timers used to use 15-18hp tractors on them. I took interest in this 326 New Holland because it was by far the nicest baler on the dealers lot that wasn't wore out in the least and always been shedded, but I guess it's way too large for me.

A 35 hp tractor will work. Some tractors have a spring cushioned clutch hub and these may not last a season. A 50 hp tractor will not surge as much with each stroke of the plunger and will have a better clutch.

My guess would be something from 35HP up will do good with it. Live PTO is also nice to have when running a baler
