JD 224 baler need part

I bought a JD 224 baler this spring for $500 that seemed in good condition. Clean, greased, had manual, and had been undershed. We baled first crop, 213 bales and no real problems. Now this am I start to bale second crop and bam!! the rod breaks that runs from flywheel gearbox back to the plunger? Pitman? And a gear cog busts in half on top near the knotter. JD equipment dealer says gear cog will cost $100 to replace and there is no replacement for the pitman rod(if that is what it is called). Anyone have any suggestions?

Bought a 224 for $500 too. But mine was out in the woods, packed with straw yet, rusting, etc. Had the 30 kicker on it though!

Well, after spending 2 months and about $800 finally had it operational. Just about all rebuilt. Those parts are expensive! Broke both needles somehow after baling about 2 loads. Found used ones from a 24T that folks say will work. Not as heavy as the 224's though.

I figured I had so much time and money spent on the thing what was another $100 part? I'm still ahead considering the price of a 336 or NH with kickers. I just pray nothing else goes!

Try to repair or find a used pitman. Then you can think about a new cog.

I feel your pain. I too had a gear break with prime second cutting ready to bale and rain on the way. Cost me loss of the hay and $1200 in repairs to the gear box.
Can the plunger rod (?) be welded? Where is it broken? If in the middle maybe cut out and replace with pipe or suitable steel tubing. There should be salvageable parts from old balers around also including the $100 gear.
A hit that violent might have broken a tooth on your bull gear in the gear box also. That's the gear I had to replace.

Not sure what made it break. It was not a heavy load. Possible that the load was and had been very small, second cutting almost disappeared as it dried. That is it looked pretty skimpy until forking it by hand, loose into the back of the truck. Then it was way too much. :) What/where is the bull gear box? It is interesting to know that the old 24s have some parts that can be used with the 224. We are looking for someone to rebuild the part and a second baler to part out.

The bull gear is in the gear box that is behind the flywheel. The power shaft comes into it from the tractor.
