501 mower belt

I"ve been using a ford 501 sickle mower for the past 5 or 6 years and I"m having lots of trouble this year with it clogging up. I"ve checked the usual suspects, dull sections and ledger plates etc, and I"m now focusing on the belt as the possible problem. The belt that was on it and still is, is not a normal v-belt. It"s some kind of belt that has pieces that are hooked together like a chain with links (sort of). I"m thinking the sides of the belt are glazed and hardened and not grabbing the pully"s like they should be. This sound reasonable??? The sides of the belt do seem rather slick and hard. Also, what is a good cleaner to use to clean the pully"s themselves. HELP!!!

I"ve mowed for 30 years with a 501 ford. It could be that belt, if thats changed since last year I would change that back to Original make. If not double check the pitch of mower.Maybe your top link needs to be shorter on your 3 point hitch. This will change the pitch of mower and sickle. You can also change the pitch by adjustments where the mower and sickle come together. You dont want your sections to plow into the dirt, but they need to be pointed ever so slightly down. This pitch downward causes the sickle to be pushed hard onto the ledger plates by the hay and forward motion of the tractor. Much the same way scissors have to be forced together to cut well. I will assume the ledger plates are not worn too bad, sickle is sharp, and lays straight and flat on all ledger plates. Hope this helps.

A link-belt on there? Huh. Well that is not standard equipment.

I'll save you a 2nd trip to the dealer. These mowers came with 3 different pulley sizes, which meant 3 different belt sizes. The serial number is no help. Measure your 2 pulleys & take that info along to the dealer.....

A new belt will likely clean up the pulleys just fine. :) It did _wonders_ for my mower. Couldn't even get through clover, now I can run in 4th most of the time.
