Hi, Just bought a John Deere Van Brunt Grain Drill to do foodplots for wildlife, I cant find a Model number on it anywhere. Where do I look at for it? Drill is on rubber, has fertilizer box, grain box and grass seed box in very front. Would like to get a manual for it to learn how to use it, also need the planting chart fot the drill.
Many Thanks!
Rick

Rick,if box is galvinized and it's fluted feed, it is a FB or FB-A.If box is green/yellow lid it's a FB-B.I think they had a metal tag on end of box.Tx Jim

Fluted feed? FB's were made in two versions from 1946 to 1952 if memory serves. The 1950 to 1952 models had a different grass seeder. The parts manual shows several kinds of horse hitches.

This is true. I have an FB that is galvanized, but is factory-painted green over the galvanized with yellow stenciling. Model info is stenciled on the lower left corner of the box (facing the tractor from behind the drill). Got some parts off a junker drill once that was purported to be an FB, which was galvanized with red stenciling. Could have been a late FF, though.

The FB here has the yellow stenciling on the fertilizer box and front left frame. Info like 17x7 runs and several patent numbers. The fertilizer box is beefy brute with cast iron sides, bottoms and distributor wheels. The previous own had it well oiled and shedded. The fertilizer box is fine. However he didn't remove the fertilizer and seed cups. Then soak them in oil as the operator's manual said to do. I replaced most of the seed cups which were still original. Then just removed the rusty fertilizer cups. Most had home made liners patched into them. Too much seed/fertilizer plugging going on with the rough rusty surfaces and flakes of rust. I'm looking for some original style "straight" rubber seed tubes. And some of those flexible spiral grass seeder tubes. For some reason yet to be found. The mechanical lift on the right side caught and broke the lift chain. I loosened the adjuster and hope it "slips" the next time it happens .
