In the process of restoring an old hay-rack/running gear. The gear is an old rubber tire Montgomery Wards brand. Can anyone tell me the proper, original paint color to use on rims and gear?

Were those David Bradleys? Or were those sold by Sears? If so, the Bradley wagons here have red gears with a pale green wheel. We have at least two of the things.

DJL,

Is it the same as the one Randy-IA posted a picture of below? Pretty sure that one is a Wards running gear. All red with white wheels?

Those things last forever.

Some models may have had white rims. I"m thinking they made 2, 4, 6, 8 ton models. The lighter gears may have had white 14" rims.

Hi NO. 2 , It does have 14" rims but with 5 lugs not 6 as I stated in my thread . And they are white . The frame is smaller than what Allan's dad had at 3-1/2 x 4-1/2 . It's all boxed and looked heavy duty when I got into the bidding war . Ended up paying 325 for it in the spring of '04 . It hasn't moved out of the weeds since . Thanks ....Randy

Could have been.

I remember the ones my dad bought had boxed axles that were something like 5X7 or 6X8".

Looked just like Randy's pictures otherwise.

Hi Allan , Looked at mine again , was going with my bad memory before . It has 5 lugs , frame is 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 , is all red with white 14" wheels ( 9.5L x 14 8ply titans ) So your best guess is a wards ? Where would I go for parts ? Or is it a " make it work with what you have " situation ? I suppose I'll limit the number of bales to 100 or so . It didn't look to heavy when I bought it . Thanks ...Randy

Generic parts. in reply to Randy-IA, 07-16-2005 07:52:40
Those running gears were made by lots of small factories and sold under all kinds of names. The gear itself was fabricated on site. About the only thing standard would be wheels, hubs, and axles. Firestone/Electric Wheel made most of those.

A bearing house should be able to find new bearings if you take the old ones in. Salvage yard car wheels should work if you match up the bolt pattern. Otherwise, buy new from Northern Tool, cut the old off and weld the new on.

Correction , I was tring to type " it looked heavy duty " not " it didn't look to heavy " in the last sentence . I got distracted . ...Randy

Nope,

No.2 on the "tractor board" is correct; they had the green wheels when new; I couldn't remember. :>(
