I broke the knotter drive chain last week as I was finishing up baling about 500 bales. It broke the chain in two pieces and I was lucky enough to find both (one piece was only 4 links long) and patched it up to bale the last 50 or so. Now I am thinking it would probably be a good idea to replace all the chains since alot of time something like this could cause me to lose the whole field to rain. My New Holland dealer wants $24 a piece for the knotter drive and both pickup drive chains. They want $36 for the big chain on the gearbox. Has anyone bought chains recently from NH that noticed what brand chain you got? Original was Morse and I'm worried they may sell some imported crap since I would have to order them and the price seems reasonable. Since the knotter and pickup chains are all 2040 chain, I thought about buying that in bulk and just making them myself but I would be nice to know the link counts if anyone has that info. I'm not sure how many links I lost on the knotter chain -- it is surely tighter now. Also, on the big chain on the gearbox, mine does not loop up over the tensioner pulley like it looks like it is supposed to in the manual. It just goes around the outside of it and there isn't enough adjustment to tighten it. Can anyone confirm that this is the way the chain is supposed to be routed and how many links is supposed to be in it? Also does anyone have a good source for 2040 and 2050 chain made in the US? Thanks

The knotter drive chain is 63 pitches of 2040 chain plus a connector.
The feeder drive chain is 77 pitches of 2050 chain plus a connector.
The drive chain from the jackshaft to the pickup is an unspecified length of 2040 chain plus a connector.
The pickup drive chain on the left side of the baler is 69 pitches of 2040 chain with a connector and offset link. Info from the parts catalog. "New Holland" roller chain ordered by part number for specific applications will be manufactured anywhere in the world, including China.

Thanks for the info Rick that is exactly what I needed to know. My big chain only has 76 links including the master. Someone must have taken a couple out in the very distant past. It has probably baled 5-10K bales like that with no problems including almost 1000 in the last month, but it is very loose and I never got serious about finding out why until now since I had so many other problems to sort out.

I must have got the knotter drive patched up right since I have the proper number albeit with a 12 penny nail and a half link. My primary pickup has 72 links including the master. May have counted wrong, would be easy to do, but that bugger on the right is almost impossible to count on the machine. I estimate it at 64 so at least I have an idea what I need. Probably 2 10' rolls of 2040 and one of 2050.

I agree completely Cowman. I suspected the NH chain was probably imported seeing it wasn't much more than bulk. Nice to make your own with known brand, have some for spares and save money in the process. I have found a place that sells 2040 Morse or Diamond chain in 10' rolls for about $15 US. Any preference on brand? I guess if the Morse chain made in 2005 is the same or better than made in 1962, I'll probably be good to go until about 2050. Thanks again.

I buy 40 and 50 chain by the 10 foot roll and keep it on hand. Insist on American made. it is worth the extra $
