Have a two rotor Hesston 3710. Much too small, Iknow. Came with the farm, and we have made do. Would like to go to a 17 footer. The next size up from Hesston, has a bad name locally. Lot of breakage. Could be the terrain, Could be the operators.Price is good though. I really like the 254 New Hollands, Just don't know if used market is the way to go on a tedder. What are some of the rest of you using, and what wear problems are you running into? Are JD made by Kuhn? All comments good or bad appreciated.

I've got a 17' NI (should be same as the Hesston). Hay Dr. is right, light made, lots of break downs, bad ones, and long lag parts support even with a good local dealer. Plus they are engineered for a brain surgeon to work on them. It does a good job and the price was right but I got what I paid for.

The US market trend is 17' and beyond hydraulic fold tedders. They save time and fuel.
The Hesston 17' you speak of is made by Eno-Rossi. It is light made for a 17'. The DeRoss is the same quality.
You have some other good choices that are somewhat heavier made. Walton(Galfre') manual fold is OK- stay away from their hydraulic fold tedders
Sitrex, Tonutti/Vermeer & Fella are the next step up. These are where the some of the best values are found.
The Kuhn MFG tedders are about the same quality as the Sitrex,Tonutti, etc. but are 2 times their price and not worth it.
The Class,Lely/Vermeer,Krone & Vicon tedders are made heavier than the Kuhn tedders and are priced like the Kuhn but a much better value.

There are other brands sold in the USA but they are not as widely sold as the brands mentioned.

Buy a Kuhn, or one made by Kuhn for someone else, such as New Holland or Deere. Right now, everything else is brand X. NH 254 is not a Kuhn product, and is a combo tedder/rake, not as wide as you are looking for, I don't think.

Thanks Rick. I may have my #'s mixed up on the New Holland. What I have looked at was strictly a tedder. What makes the Kuhn so much better? A lot of Euro. stuff in the market around here. Seems to be pretty lite stuff and won't stand up to use.

I think the model you are looking for is the 167. We have a 163, and that is the 13-14 ft model (4 rotors). On ours, the biggest thing is not going too fast and setting the height correctly. Nothing in the drive lines or gear box has broken and this thing is almost 15 years old. We have replaced 2 plates just because they wore out the wholes from lots of use. You won't be dissapointed with a Khun/ NH. I am not sure what you are teddering and what tractors you have, but we do over 100 acres of bedding (bluegrass horse bedding) and pull our 14 fter with a farmall 140, and you can't beat the economy on that. Good luck

They stay together better than other brands. They use heavier parts than the Sitrex units I have seen and the drive engineering is better (stronger) than other brands I have seen and used. We don't have a strong Vermeer dealer within 250 miles or so, so I can't speak about that brand. Kuhn has a well deserved good reputation here in the Northeast. Every major Ag equipment dealer within 50 miles sells Kuhn, and they all sell a lot of it. Parts sales are minimal, especially on the latest generation of machines, some of which has been over quite a bit of ground.

I've got a Kuhn and have used a Peaqua. My biggest complaint with the Kuhn, mines a combo tedder/rake that I just use for tedding, is the wheels are solid, not casters. This makes for a lot of trouble in small fields and leads to blown tires. They expect you to use the 3 pt to lift the tedder at every turn which is darned inefficient. I'm adding casters from TSC now. Other than that the Kuhn is a good machine. I think I still like the Peaqua/Grimm type better for pure tedding. The rotary type flings the hay everywhere whereas the horizontal type puts it behind the tedder and lets you "aim" the hay where you want it. Couldn't do without one or the other in any case.
