Hay Bale Spraying

I was looking around one of the ag centers for equipment last night. They were already closed so no one available to ask questions. There was a JD baler with a plastic tank on top of it. I am guessing it would hold about 50 gallons. It had a hose that ran down and onto the pick up guard. had 4 small spray heads facing into the pickup chamber. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why you would want to get your cured hay wet again. What would that be used to spray onto the hay?

That is a preservative applicator. Two type os preservatives are used on baled hay: Organic Acid mixtures, and Bacterial Mixes.

I just picked up a sprayer kit yesterday for alfalfa and best I can tell you want to shoot for a 22%-25% moisture on squares.It keeps the molds from growing.I'm using a buffered propionic acid that is not supposed to rust the bailer up.In my figures it will cost about $.30 a bail.
