How is the cutting bar height adjusted? Is it just by the shoes. Looks like it will cut low.

Tractor drawbar, header skid shoes, header springs.

Amen to that!

I found an inner spring broken. They do make a difference!

Spring setting is often overlooked. When I bought the NI discbine in '90, the dealer was meticulous about setting the springs- according to the drawbar height, but especially according to ground speed. Static setting is not the same as mobile- the header pulls down more at higher ground speeds because of the resistance of the hay to being cut. Just for fun I increased gs by one gear each round on the half-mile long field. Got the 4430 up to 11 mph and a rabbit got in the way. Did a fantastic fillet job on it.

I have mine set to cut as high as possible and it still cuts some things too short to suit me. I'm thinking of doing something to extend the heigth such as welding another plate to the bottom of the shoes.

Yes, the shoes determine how high the cutter bar will cut. Also the height of your tractor hitch is critical as well. I run my 1219 with the shoes set so it will cut as high as possible, and that is about the right height in my opinion. I pull it with a 4020 Deere, and I have the drawbar flipped to the high side for mounting the hitch and pulling the machine. Tractors with lower drawbars cause it to drag rather than cut clean.
