Okay guy's i have 90 acres of open pasture(cattle and horses), some are small lots 5 & 10 acres and a couple larger, biggest at 45 acres all wrap around home place right in middle(water supply). rolling hills none terribly steep. Some of the surrounding open woods are also pastured in (app. 25 ac. full of weeds also). Using rotational grazing methods. I Have ford 2n (lawn mower), 4010 jd & 6030jd(cab). Need to buy a sprayer but cant decide whether to go boomless or boomed (wet or dry)??? Thinking of getting one @ 100 gallons so I can use the 9n (smaller more nimble, cheaper to operate, EASIER to get on and off of) want to start spraying some for weed control instead of mowing so much. ( thistles, pig weed, dog fennels, and others) love this sight and enjoy reading the post for the education. I feel as if Im listening and talking with neighbors and old friends(i check in on yall everyday if time allows). Thank you for your advice in advance all help is appreciated! reguards

Have you seen the boomless nozzels offered from spray systems? There is a right and a left. Each sprays from center to the outside 18.5 ft. You can spray left side right side or both covering 37 ft. They fan to rear instead of up like the old boomjet does so wind does not affect it as much and helps to keep the material off of you.
You can spay into field edges and fences without snaging the boom.

Boomless sprayers do not get along well with any wind over a few mph. It blows onto you as well as drifting to the neighbor's. Tank size depends only on how often you want to refill it. That 8N should easily handle a 200 gallon sprayer- that would hold 1600 lbs of water. Regarding pumps- make sure the pump will tolerate the herbicide you plan to use. Some roller pumps deteriorate according to the herbicide. Centrifugal pumps, like Ace and Hydro, provide plenty of capacity for agitation and spraying, and handle any herbicide. If you are spraying grassland (ie- no rows to follow) you might consider a marking device to prevent skips and overlap. Get a manifold that allows for splitting the boom as well as a position for a hand wand. With that 4010, you might consider a 3ph sprayer- easier to maneuver and the controls would be in reach.

Hate to but-in on your post, but I'm kind of curious if you have priced any sprayers in NC. I'm from NC as well, and I'm somewhat in the market for a sprayer. I am currently nursing an old sprayer along, but the down time is killing me.

Mr. MH , currently looking at the one at tractor supply item #2137683 100 gallon cap./28' boom. i was thinking 200 gallons would be too much weight for the n-series and cut down my versatility.but then i don't have to fill it completely up do i

If that is 3pt I have some experience:

I have a 110 gal Demco sprayer with 20' boom. It has 3 sections - left, middle, right. The normal shiny controller for on/off, and which booms to activate. It has the typical pressure control, with bypass going back to agitate the tank. I also got a wand with 15' or so of hose. It has a little blue rollerpump for pto - I'd get the better one that doesn't corrode with Roundup if I were buying these days, wasn't an issue back in '90 when I bought it.

Really like it for stuff like you are doing. I run about 9-10 acres on a tankfull. Seems with spraying it takes as long to fill as it does to spray, so if you are not driving far from the water source it won't really matter much if you need to fill more often.

I run it on a 960 Ford tractor much of the time, and it makes the front wheels real light - wide front but no extra weighting. You will need some weight on the front of your tractor as you have a smaller one, but I believe a good N should be able to pick it up. I would not bother with a 200 gal 3pt sprayer unless you planned to use the 4xxx JD for spraying - your N will be well loaded at 100 gal.

I do not like boomless sprayers, don't even see them around here on the prairie - any wind & you have nothing at all.....

I just bought a used 300 gal 40' trailer sprayer, cleaned out the tips & it has served me well this spring for $350. But I still use the 100 gal 3pt a lot too - very handy for spot spraying or tight places.

Considering the acres you"ll be tending, I wouldn"t go smaller that a 100 ga. I"d go with booms as thay can always be folded in for easy manuvering - and you can cut off one side to get up close to the tree line when you need a smaller coverage area because of crops. I"d also put on a wand (the sprayer manifold should allow this no problem). That way you can spot spray when you need to.
Check these people out. I bought a 55gal sprayer from them. Came with a wand, suction filter with cut off valve, pressure gauge, 6" booms - even the fittings and torque bar for the pump! All I had to add to get operating was the pump. (Went with an 8 roller Hypro)

I got the sprayer at Rural King for under $380.00

Good Luck...
